Å·ÃÀÈÕb´óƬ's definition of "extreme poverty" has been revised to living on less than $1.90 per day from $1.25 per day, reflecting the latest updates in purchasing power parities. This table shows poverty rates by region -- and the absolute number of people that fall under this threshold. The estimate for 2012 puts the number of extremely poor people at 900 million, or 12.8 percent of global population. Poverty in Africa exceeded that of other regions, and stood at 42.6%. The 2012 estimate represents continued progress in poverty reduction as the revised headcount in 2011 was 987 million people (14.2 percent of global population).
