Dam safety and resilience is an increasing area of concern worldwide. Some of the notable issues, in developing countries particularly, are pertaining to sustainable operation and management of dams, including financial and human resources and resilience to geophysical hazards (e.g. earthquakes, landslides), floods, drought, and cascading disasters.
Within this context, the institutional provisions for enhancing dam safety through quality assurance in design and construction, establishing secure financing mechanisms that provide sustainable revenue streams, building operational capacity in identifying, reducing, preparing for, and responding to natural disasters, is an increasing challenge for many countries including those in the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region.
The World Bank Disaster Risk Management Hub, Tokyo and Water Global Practice are jointly conducting case studies on Japan, Myanmar, and Laos to capture best practices on dam safety and disaster resilience for EAP. The knowledge product developed will be integrated into the World Bank’s global dam safety study. The project will inform a knowledge exchange and dissemination workshop for EAP region, wherein Japanese experts will share their innovative ideas, advanced practices and experience on dam safety and disaster resilience.
