Services and Structural Transformation Workshop

February 1, 2023

World Bank, MC 13-121

Conference
  • Structural transformation in the past three decades has been driven by a fast-growing services sector, which has outpaced the manufacturing sector in many developing economies. Yet services-led development has been understudied by researchers and underappreciated by policy makers as a means to raise incomes and reduce poverty.  How can policy makers transform their economies by utilizing the services sector as a source of productivity gains and job creation?

The Services and Structural Transformation Workshop, hosted by the World Bank EFI Chief Economist’s Office, showcased recent evidence on how the services sector will be increasingly central to productive structural transformation in emerging market and developing economies. A slate of leading experts delivered presentations on sectoral labor productivity, deindustrialization and industry polarization, growth dynamics in the services sector, the industrialization of services, and job creation in the services sector. The full-day event concluded with a panel discussion on policy priorities to leverage services-led growth.
