Youth Contest: The Impact of Higher Education in Tajikistan
February 17-26, 2016Tajikistan

This contest is now closed.

OBJECTIVE

What impact has higher education had on you?

Around the globe, higher education is often prized for its contribution to economic and social development. Research has linked graduates of higher education to longer life expectancy, better health outcomes, greater life satisfaction, and a higher likelihood to both volunteer and vote – not to mention the broader economic benefits of higher education associated with economic growth, innovation, and labor market flexibility. University graduates in Tajikistan, specifically, are employed at nearly twice the rate of their peers with a secondary education diploma and, on average, have a 40% higher wage than those with only secondary education.

The objective of this contest was to collect ideas, expressions, stories, and moments of how higher education is impacting or has impacted the youth of Tajikistan. The contest was intended to promote the Government of Tajikistan’s Higher Education Project, which will be implemented by the Ministry of Education and Science and financed by the World Bank.

2. Murtazokulova Zaynura, 21 years old, Tajik-National University, Dushanbe

"I want to thank the World Bank for this great opportunity. This is a great chance to talk about education. Education is the most powerful thing that everybody must posses. Especially higher education. Tajikistan is in the stage of improving its system. For all sectors we need  professionals. Nowadays we have a lot of students who graduated high schools, but not all of them will enter University to get higher education. I want to talk about women’s education. This is the saddest thing in Tajikistan, especially for women in rural areas. Education has a specially place in my life. I am a student now and I want to get Master’s Degree in abroad. If I was not educated myself, how could I be a leader in my community? I dedicate most of my time working with girls, who want to study but do not have such opportunity. I graduated from a college in America and now I teach girls how to be leaders. I am a leader for them. This is the effect of education. One great philosopher said: “Educate a girl, education a nation.” Future mothers must be educated. If I wasn’t educated how can I help all these young women?  If each of us educates at least two persons, then these women will educate others and thus, we will have an education nation".

3. Masaidov Farrukhjon, 18 years old, Khujand (Technical University of Khudjand)

Translation from Russian:

"When entering the University, I thought that finding a good paying job after graduation is the only goal there is. Currently I am finishing the 2 year of my studies majoring in Information technologies in Economics. The received knowledge is opening new opportunities in front of me: I am a volunteer of the National Association of Business Women of Tajikistan, am holding trainings on IT to school children. I also do tutoring. The profession I have chosen plays an important role in the development of the economy. My country is in dire need of high level professionals. I want to successfully graduate and contribute not only to my family budget, but also to my country’s development I want to see the world and get the best practice experience in IT internationally. I am sure it is not possible to implement all these without education!"

4. Rozikzoda Saodat, 2 year student, Tajik National University, from Varzob town

Translation from Tajik:

"I am a daughter of an architect. Why I am bringing up my father? Because despite the fact that my father grew up in a family of poor parents with many children, he managed to find his place in the society and gain people’s respect only through higher education and acquiring a profession. I remember, how even on weekends, many neighbors of ours in the village would come to our house to seek my dad’s advice on construction issues. Now, I am very happy that out of 8 girls from Luchob village applying, I was a lucky one to enter the University. I hope that just like my father, I will acquire my place in the society through higher education."

Translation from Russian:

"An advice from my parents - Chose a goal and try every effort to achieve it – played an important role in my life.  I entered the University and from being a closed, unsociable guy from a small town, I turned into a person with many friends, with many people around with similar interests, education goals, sports, etc. Due to studying in the university I have a new set of values, principles, I have the right attitude to life, that I am working towards achieving not just my personal goals, but also those serving the society, the country. While choosing my major I did not think of choosing something “modern” or “beneficial”. I chose what my heart told me and now I am happy that I have many opportunities in front of me professionally. Education is the source of my confidence in the bright future."

7. Anastasiya Kim, 21 years old, Tajik-Russian Slavonic University, Dushanbe

Translation from Russian:

"Every person need to rationally evaluate the need to receive higher education, and approach this issue consciously, with desire and independently from other people’s opinions. Higher education, apart from increasing my intellectual skills, also develops my communication skills, my self-discipline, and my self-organization, which are important skills to possess in the society.

One fact that due to my excellent achievements during my study in the Tajik-Russian Slavonic University I was able to spend one semester in one of the best Universities of Austria, can be a proof that higher education is having a huge impact on my life. Now I am studying in the 4th year, and already got a job in logistics, so I am quite sure without higher education it is not possible to overcome next barriers in life!"

8. Rajabbek Otashbekov, born in 1992, Dushanbe (ORIGINALLY FROM KHOROG, TAJIK STATE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY NAMED AFTER ACADEMICIAN OSIMI)

"Years of labor are needed in order to answer this unusual question. It should be noted that the whole process, starting with preparatory admission courses and ending with diplomas award, changes humanity significantly. Everybody starts to realize the meaning of life more, understand things properly, esteem others profoundly, appreciate his or herself as an individual, and finally, becomes independent. Thanks to background achieved at university, I am currently involved in management and implementation of Electro-energy Sector projects financed by the Asian Development Bank, and working on procurement of plant, conducting International Competitive Bids, attending seminars abroad, etc. Given that the foregoing was thoroughly impossible to achieve without education, I am proud of my overpast efforts and always remind myself: “The best is yet to come!"

9. Sayora Umarova, born 1993, Dushanbe (Russian-Tajik Slavonic University)

The poem in Russian talks about the fact that students years have taught her to value everything more, to think wisely, that she acquired lots of friends that she got lots of knowledge although the process was not so easy, but it is important not to give up and challenge yourself, in order to grow, only by taking on new challenges you can change the world.
