Overview

The Development Impact Group¡¯s Artificial Intelligence Team (DIME AI) is pioneering the next frontier of impact evaluation and development programming. By leveraging AI and machine learning, our applied AI lab develops and implements research, interventions, and tools that drive AI-powered solutions to leapfrog development gaps across key thematic areas.

At the core of our work is a commitment to maintaining and benchmarking the highest ethical standards and rigor, particularly when deploying AI in vulnerable communities to address pressing global challenges. Guided by this principle, DIME AI leads several flagship initiatives, including:

  • ImpactAI: Synthesizing quantitative causal research evidence to improve development financing decisions.

  • ZeroHungerAI: Advancing predictions of food crises outbreaks with non-traditional data sources and state-of-the-art models.

  • SocialAI: Developing AI algorithms for low-resource contexts and languages, including detecting online hate speech and mitigating biases in large-language models (LLMs).

Partnerships

At DIME AI, we collaborate with Google.org as thought partners to advance the use of AI in addressing global social and economic challenges. We were part of Google.org¡¯s first-ever GenAI Accelerator in 2024 where we developed our ImpactAI prototype, an AI-driven solutions to empower policymakers, enhance productivity, and streamline research, driving innovation and impact across key development outcomes. Since 2025, our team¡¯s work on AI-powered food insecurity predictions is also supported by Google.org. To learn more about our partnership with Google.org, click .

In addition, with funding from the Gates Foundation, we are expanding our work on context-specific LLMs in India, Kenya, and Nigeria. This includes analyzing media content for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) with LLMs and understanding the biases that are present within these models. We aim to build and publish evaluation tools to foster meaningful policy dialogues in key media hubs.

Development Impact Group AI¡¯s most recent initiatives focus on the following:

The challenge: Research insights can guide investments that reduce poverty and promote shared prosperity, but the vastness of research literature makes it challenging for decision-makers to find and synthesize this information to maximize development impact. Traditional methods of accessing research are slow and cumbersome, with critical insights buried in extensive literature. With a growing development finance gap, estimated at $4 trillion in 2024 ¨C now more than ever ¨C it is critical to allocate the limited resources for maximum impact.?

DIME AI¡¯s innovation: ImpactAI, our flagship project, harnesses the power of large language models (LLMs) to sift through swathes of impact evaluation research and accurately extract insights that provide effortless access to causal evidence for improved decision-making. With a generative AI layer, users can ask the tool questions in natural language and receive quick, reliable, actionable responses. Unlike existing AI-for-research tools, ImpactAI specializes in causal evidence and delivers aggregated, quantitative research summaries and interactive visualizations ¨C delivering months of analysis in seconds. Primary users include development practitioners, policymakers, academics, think tanks, and impact investors. As a one-stop source that lowers the barriers to accessing high-quality research, ImpactAI offers easy access to cutting-edge ideas, best practices, and empirical evidence, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of development projects worldwide.

Scaling our impact: ImpactAI provides a powerful foundation to advance development in various ways. In the future, it will also include predictive models to forecast the impact of policy interventions. Future iterations of the tool will also incorporate more qualitative insights to help users understand the context and mechanisms behind successful interventions. Thereby, we may also be able to assess and guide the design of development project ¨C directly informed by the latest research evidence. To provide diverse and representative research insights,?future updates are also expected to include studies in other languages as the tool evolves.?
