Miguel Coelho


Miguel Castro Coelho, Portuguese national, serves as World Bank Group Alternate Executive Director for Italy, Portugal, Albania, Greece, Malta, San Marino, Timor Leste since May 1, 2020.

Mr. Coelho has about two decades of experience in a variety of roles in policy focused environments, including governments, think tanks, and academia.

Prior to joining the WBG Board, Mr. Coelho was Chief Economist in the Office of the Portuguese Finance Minister. He served as Fellow and Senior Economist at the Institute for Government and as Head of the Secretariat of the London School of Economics Growth Commission from 2011-2016. Prior to that, he was Senior Policy Advisor at the Policy and Implementation Unit of 10 Downing Street; Strategy Advisor in the UK Department for Education; and Senior Policy Advisor in the UK Prime Minister Strategy Unit.

Mr. Coelho has a Ph.D. in Public Policy and a Master of Science in Public Service Management from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom; and a degree in Economics from the University of Porto, Portugal.
