Matteo Bugamelli, an Italian national, is the Executive Director for Albania, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, San Marino, and Timor-Leste. He is currently the Dean of the World Bank Board of Executive Directors. He was the Chair of the Board¡¯s Budget Committee from 2020 to 2022 and of the Board¡¯s Audit Committee from 2022 to 2023. He also served on the Board¡¯s Ethics Committee.
Mr. Bugamelli comes from over 20 years of experience working with the Bank of Italy: immediately before joining the WBG Board, he was Director in the Research Department and Coordinator of the Regional Research Branches; and prior to that, he led the Economic Structure and Labor Market Division.
Mr. Bugamelli holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Bologna (Italy) and a PhD in Economics from Columbia University, New York. He has been a visiting scholar in the Department of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley.
Mr. Bugamelli has authored and co-authored several articles on International Trade, International Migration and Remittances, Firm Behavior.
