BRIEF

Education Research from the Development Research Group

Over and above their intrinsic value, investments in education are crucial for economic development in low- and middle-income countries due to their transformative impact on human capital formation, productivity enhancement, and sustainable growth. The Development Research Group (DECRG) at the World Bank conducts cutting-edge research on education a) to understand the global patterns in educational attainment and b) to test and evaluate programs and interventions aimed at improving both the quantity and the quality of education from early childhood development to the school to work transition.

This page highlights research on the topic of education produced by the DECRG in collaboration with research partners at the World Bank and other institutions.

DECRG's recent portfolio of work (completed and ongoing) on education can be broadly categorized into the following five thematic areas:

One crucial area of study is early childhood development (ECD). Understanding the impact of early experiences on cognitive, social, and emotional development lays the foundation for effective interventions that support children's readiness for school and lifelong learning.

Another focus of research is the school-to-work transition, exploring pathways for youth to successfully transition from education to employment. Understanding the skills and competencies needed in the labor market, as well as the role of vocational training and entrepreneurship programs, informs policies and initiatives aimed at facilitating smooth transitions and fostering youth empowerment.
