The Challenge

Identifying competition challenges in key markets and embedding competition principles into policy design is essential for achieving sustainability goals¡ªwhether it's greening the planet, ensuring global food security, or driving digital transformation. A C-JET grant is powering the development of tools like the Markets and Competition Policy Assessment Tool (MCPAT), which is being applied to sectors critical to green policy, food security, and digitalization. The case studies created through this grant will feed directly into the From Market Power to Markets that Power Growth report, with tools and guidance notes supporting the preparation of Competitive Economic Models (CEMs).

Mission

Thanks to CJET funding, two keynotes have been developed to strengthen country-level engagement in creating competitive, open markets in the digital economy and food sectors. Additionally, research on Energy Transition Minerals (ETMs) value chains supports the green agenda.

The draft note on Competition Policy for the Digital Economy has already shaped engagements in Brazil and Kenya, and will soon inform discussions in Kazakhstan. In Brazil, the note helped steer the public consultation on digital platform regulation, influencing the design of a tailored framework based on global best practices. In Kenya, the recommendations contributed to proposed amendments to competition law to better address digital market challenges, as part of a broader initiative to boost productivity and inclusivity in key markets.

Progress on analyzing market power in global and African grain value chains is on track, with a background note for the Competition Report slated for FY25Q1. Recommendations addressing competition issues in agriculture, linked to food security, are feeding into policy dialogues in Malawi, focusing on competition law enforcement.

The G7 ETM note, backed by analysis of copper and Li-ion battery value chains, is already driving efforts to map out ETM strategies and roadmaps in East and Southern Africa¡ªan essential step in securing the green energy transition.
