Coming from a long lineage of griots, Sona is a master of the kora, a 21-stringed harp-like instrument made from a calabash gourd, traditionally played only by men. Taught by her father and other great players, she has become a virtuoso in this male-dominated field, redefining what it means to be a griot.
In 2015, Sona founded The Gambia Academy to create a revolutionary educational model for children in The Gambia and beyond.
