Wetlands are unique ecosystems of water, plants, and animals. In addition to their beauty, they provide a host of tangible benefits to people such as: providing fish, medicine, tourism revenue, and transportation. They also serve as buffers to the emerging threat of climate change by regulating floods and storing carbon. Yet, wetlands are often drained to give way to agriculture or buildings. One reason is that these benefits or ¡°services¡± are never quantified. Countries like Uganda are working with the World Bank¡¯s Global Program on Sustainability to measure and value these services, so that they can help them make more informed decisions on the use of natural resources, like the wetlands.
