Leveraging climate change policies to promote local forest rights

At the end of 2015, State Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change are expected to reach agreement on limiting global temperatures to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and adapting to climate change. Typically climate change and tenure are linked in the context of REDD+. Although tenure will not be part of the text of the new climate agreement, it may inform the international climate change agenda also in other ways through, for example, the newly-established Green Climate Fund and governments¡¯ expected contributions to achieving the 2 degree target¡ªcalled Intended Nationally Determined Contributions. Moreover, climate change policy dialogue can also raise awareness on the importance of tenure security given the results of recent research on the role of secure community tenure in mitigating climate change, through lower deforestation and carbon storage. This policy roundtable will discuss efforts at the international and national levels to mitigate and adapt to climate change and their relevance to land tenure. The purpose is to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration and learning between climate experts and land tenure experts to maximize effective policy at the international and national levels.
