Introductory presentation:

The situation of the fertilizer sector and introduction to the roadmap on fertilizer and soil health in West Africa and the Sahel

West Africa faces its worst food crisis in ten years, with more than 41 million people in acute food insecurity during this year¡¯s lean season.

At a time of uncertainty and multiple crises, the future of agriculture, food security, and development in West Africa are closely interlinked. Lack of nutrients and of use of organic and mineral fertilizers has hampered soil health and agricultural productivity. The fertilizer sector is at the heart of both the problems and the solutions for economic transformation in the region.

Leaders and Ministers of agriculture and finance from the West Africa gathered in Lom¨¦ on May 30 and 31 for this high-level roundtable co-hosted by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Togo Presidency with support from the World Bank and the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), to agree on a common roadmap for advancing reforms and investments to make fertilizers more accessible and affordable across the region.
