Å·ÃÀÈÕb´óƬ Group launched Nepal¡¯s Country Climate and Development Report (CCDR) on September 15, 2022. The CCDR is a core World Bank Group analytical product that identifies ways in which Nepal can achieve its overall development objectives while fostering its strategic ambition to transition to a green, resilient, and inclusive development (GRID) pathway.

The event discussed:

  • Nepal¡¯s climate and development challenges, and recommended investment and policy priorities to drive development while managing climate risks.
  • Ways to support Nepal to transition to and implement its GRID vision articulated in the landmark ¡®Kathmandu Declaration¡¯, , and other national commitments.

Nepal has achieved significant development progress in recent decades. Due in large part to steady inflows from remittances, the country has expanded access to electricity and drinking water, improved youth literacy, raised primary and secondary school enrollment and reduced infant mortality. Nepal is also one of the only countries in the world to have expanded forest cover, to 44 percent today from around 25 percent in the early 1990s, relying on community-based forest management.

Development gains may be at risk due to climate change as Nepal is highly vulnerable to climate and disaster risks. Rising temperatures, melting glaciers, and more intense rainfall are expected to increase climate-related hazards, particularly flooding and landslides. Women, indigenous people, and other marginalized groups are often excluded from mainstream development and suffer from cumulative and cascading impacts of climate change and disasters.

While the Climate Change and Development Report (CCDR) for Nepal does not address all dimensions of climate and development, it proposes an overall framework, recommends selected priority actions to enhance synergies and manage tradeoffs among development and climate objectives, and identifies areas for further assessment and dialogue. The CCDR is a contribution to an evolving analytical agenda on climate and development in Nepal.
