  • COVID-19 challenged healthcare systems across the Middle East and North Africa, many of which were overburdened even before the pandemic began. High public wage bills crowded out investments in social services such as health, a syndrome described as "fiscal myopia" by the latest World Bank ?MENA Economic Update report?, Overconfident: How Economic and Health Fault Lines Left the Middle East and North Africa Ill-Prepared to Face COVID-19. The report predicts a tenuous and uneven recovery as countries emerge from COVID-19, which will also be influenced by the widely varying pace of vaccination rates across the region. Learn more by joining this event.

     

  • World Bank Chief Economist for MENA, Roberta Gatti, joins Karen Young, head of the Energy and Economy Program at the ?Middle East Institute (MEI) to discuss growth prospects for the region. Co-hosted by MEI and the World Bank, this October 25 webinar opens with comments from the World Bank's MENA Vice President, Ferid Belhaj, and MEI President, Paul Salem, followed by a presentation on the latest MENA Economic Update. Following a conversation between Ms Gatti and Ms. Young, there will be a Q&A session with a virtual audience. This ?The latest ?edition ?of the MENA Economic Update is titled, Overconfident: How Economic and Health Fault Lines Left the Middle East and North Africa Ill-Prepared to Face COVID-19, and looks specifically at the preparedness of MENA¡¯s public health systems to handle a pandemic.
