  • With almost half of adults owning a smartphone worldwide, behavior change campaigns and development apps can cost-effectively reach different household members at scale. To work, these approaches need to be persuasive, engaging, and properly adapted to their target populations. The Poverty & Equity Global Practice and the Development Impact Evaluation Department (DIME) webinar discussed how smartphones are being used from teaching young children how to read in rural areas to social media campaigns promoting health-seeking behaviors in urban areas. The event consisted of 8-minute presentations that discussed the partnership models for global collaboration, recent experimental evidence from South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, and the latest mobile technologies being rigorously tested in development. A policymaker panel followed to discuss challenges and opportunities to systematically operationalize mobile-based solutions in development investments.
